The First Piece of Jewellery I Ever Gave My Girlfriend

It was cheap. It was slightly crooked. But it started a tradition that eventually ended with a custom wedding ring.

The Crooked Heart

I was twenty-one when I bought the first gift for my girlfriend. I was a student with a bank account that hovered near double digits, and zero knowledge about fine metals.

I walked into a street market and bought a silver-plated necklace with a small, slightly crooked heart pendant. It cost me five hundred rupees, and I was terrified to give it to her. I thought she would laugh or think it was cheap.

But when she opened the box, she smiled. She put it on immediately, and she wore it until the plating rubbed off and the metal turned copper.

She didn't love the necklace; she loved the boy who had nervous hands when he gave it to her.

The Evolution of Gold

That crooked heart was the beginning of our love story's archive. Five years later, when I got my first job, I replaced it with a solid gold pendant from Riolls Jewels. And five years after that, I proposed with a custom diamond ring we designed together in Surat.

Every piece of jewellery I have given her since has been an update to that first crooked heart, marking our growth as individuals and as a couple.
