Symmetry is paramount — both lobes must be perfectly matched in size, height, and curvature, with a well-defined cleft (the "V" at the top). The point at the bottom must be sharp and centered. A length-to-width ratio between 0.90 and 1.10 is ideal; below 0.85, the heart looks squat; above 1.10, it looks elongated and loses its romantic proportions.
Heart shaped diamonds show colour slightly more than round brilliants but less than step cuts. The pointed tip and curved lobes can concentrate or reveal body colour. We recommend G–H colour for a white appearance in white gold settings. For rose or yellow gold, I–J colour hearts offer excellent value as the warm metal complements the stone beautifully.
The brilliant-cut facet pattern of a heart diamond does an excellent job of masking inclusions through light dispersion. SI1 clarity is typically eye-clean for hearts above 1 carat. For hearts under 1 carat, VS2 is recommended because inclusions are more visible in smaller stones. Avoid inclusions near the point, as this area is vulnerable to chipping if an inclusion creates a weak spot.
Heart shaped diamonds require a minimum of approximately 0.50 carats for the shape to be clearly recognisable as a heart. Below this size, the lobes and cleft are too small to distinguish, and the stone may look like a round or pear.
