Why choose a custom marquise cut diamond engagement ring?

Commissioned by King Louis XV of France in the 1740s to match the lips of the Marchioness Madame de Pompadour, the marquise cut features 58 brilliant facets cut into an elongated boat shape. It offers the largest surface area per carat of any diamond cut.

The pointed ends of a marquise cut require specialized V-prong protection. At Riolls, our Surat craftspeople engineer custom V-cap settings or platinum bezel frames that shield delicate tips while maximizing light return.

Hand-forged in solid 14k, 18k gold or platinum with GIA/IGI certification and direct workshop value.

Questions Answered

Everything you need to know about custom marquise diamond rings

What is a marquise cut diamond?

Commissioned by King Louis XV of France in the 18th century to mimic the smile of the Marchioness of Pompadour, the marquise cut (or "navette") features a boat-shaped contour with two pointed ends and 58 brilliant facets. It delivers dramatic finger length and maximum face-up diamond spread.

Why does a marquise diamond look larger than other shapes of the same carat weight?

Due to its long, pointed silhouette and shallow crown angle, a marquise cut diamond offers the largest face-up surface area per carat of any diamond shape. A 1.00-carat marquise diamond appears visibly larger on the hand than a 1.00-carat round brilliant diamond.

How are the twin pointed tips of a marquise diamond protected?

The two pointed ends of a marquise diamond are its most vulnerable points. Our master goldsmiths fit custom V-prong corner caps or bezel rims over both tips to protect against accidental chips while highlighting the elongated geometry.

What is an East-West marquise diamond setting?

In a traditional setting, a marquise diamond is set vertically parallel to the finger. In a modern "East-West" setting, the stone is mounted horizontally across the band. Both orientations are available for custom Riolls commissions.
