The round brilliant diamond is the most scientifically optimised diamond shape in existence. Developed by Belgian mathematician Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919, it features 57 or 58 precisely calculated facets — 33 on the crown and 25 on the pavilion (or 24 plus a culet) — arranged to maximise the return of light through the top of the stone.
Tolkowsky's original ideal proportions — a 53% table, 34.5° crown angle, and 40.75° pavilion angle — remain the foundation of modern diamond cutting theory. Today, the GIA grades the cut quality of round brilliants from “Excellent” to “Poor”, evaluating how well the stone's proportions, symmetry, and polish work together to create brilliance (white light), fire (spectral colour), and scintillation (sparkle when moving).

How the Round Brilliant Cut Works
When white light enters the round brilliant through the table (the flat top facet), the precisely angled crown facets act as windows, channelling light deep into the stone. The pavilion facets (the angled bottom facets) then act as mirrors, bouncing the light between them before projecting it back out through the crown.
If the pavilion angle is too shallow, light leaks through the bottom. If it is too steep, light exits through the sides. Only when the angles fall within the ideal range — approximately 40.6° to 41.0° for the pavilion — does the diamond achieve total internal reflection, returning more than 90% of entering light back to the viewer's eye.
This engineering precision is why the round brilliant sparkles more intensely than any other diamond shape.
