The radiant cut diamond is a rectangular or square shape with trimmed corners and 70 brilliant-cut facets. Invented in 1977 by Henry Grossbard, it was the first diamond shape to apply a complete brilliant-cut facet pattern to a non-round outline.
Before the radiant, rectangular and square diamonds were limited to step-cut patterns (emerald, Asscher) which produced a calm, mirror-like brilliance. Grossbard's innovation was to combine the geometric silhouette of a step cut with the intense, fiery sparkle of a brilliant cut — creating a hybrid that offers the best of both worlds.
The result is a diamond that looks architectural from a distance (clean rectangular outline with cropped corners) but explodes with rapid, fiery sparkle when seen up close. The radiant's 70 facets are more than almost any other diamond shape, producing an exceptionally dense, energetic sparkle pattern.
How the Radiant Cut Works
The radiant's 70 brilliant-cut facets are arranged in a modified pattern that includes both triangular and kite-shaped facets on the crown and pavilion. Unlike the emerald cut (which it visually resembles), the radiant breaks light into rapid, numerous sparkles rather than long, clean flashes.
The higher facet count produces exceptionally dense scintillation — more individual sparkle events per movement than almost any other shape. The cropped corners allow additional light entry from the sides, further enhancing brilliance. The result is a diamond that appears to be “on fire” in any lighting condition.
This intense brilliance also makes the radiant the best shape for coloured diamonds. The 70 facets concentrate and saturate body colour, making yellows appear deeper, pinks more vivid, and champagne tones richer. The radiant cut features 70 facets — more than almost any other diamond shape. No GIA cut grade exists. The ideal ratio is 1.00–1.05 for square radiants and 1.20–1.50 for rectangular. The cropped corners should be symmetrical and proportional. Look for even light distribution, no dark areas, and a lively face-up pattern with intense scintillation.
Radiant cuts are excellent at intensifying colour — which is why they are the most popular shape for fancy colour diamonds (yellow, pink, etc.). For colourless radiants, this means body colour can be more visible. We recommend G–H for white settings. For fancy colour diamonds, the radiant's ability to concentrate saturation makes it the ideal shape.
The radiant's 70 brilliant-cut facets create intense scintillation that masks inclusions exceptionally well — comparable to or better than a round brilliant. SI1 is typically eye-clean above 1 carat. VS2 offers extra security. The cropped corners and dynamic sparkle pattern make the radiant one of the most forgiving shapes for clarity.
The radiant's face-up size falls between a round and a princess. A 1.00-carat square radiant measures approximately 5.5–5.8mm across.
